The Heniochus Butterfly, a.k.a. Bannerfish, is a gorgeous high profile fish with an elongated dorsal fin. These fish are white with a pair of black bands and a bright yellow tail. The Red Sea Golden Butterfly has always been a very popular species with aquarists and will make a nice addition to the home aquarium. The Red Sea Golden Butterfly does well in a community type aquarium, with other Butterflies and Angelfish.
The Heniochus should be kept in a tank large enough for them to swim freely. Known locally as abu sharaa (with sail), it is also endemic and is frequently misidentified as one or other similar-looking species that live in the Arabian Gulf and Indian Ocean. In certain locations of the Red Sea, the bannerfish and the lemon butterflyfish school together and remain there for long periods of time.
The family of Butterflyfish get their name from their behavior of fluttering around the reef. These fish typically have rather round and thin bodies. They are very colorful and some have extended snouts which they use to reach worms entrenched in the reef
Behavior: The Heniochus (Bannerfish) Butterfly may act peacefully toward other fish.
Maximum Size: Red Sea Butterfly or the Chaetodon semilarvatus grows up to 9 inches.
Minimum Tank Size: The Red Sea Butterfly / The Heniochus (Bannerfish) Butterfly prefers a tank of at least 80 gallons with plenty of places to hide & swim.
Water Conditions: Keep water quality high (SG 1.020 - 1.025, pH 8.1 - 8.4, Temp. 72 - 78° F).
